Leucadia

Leucadia is located just south of the Batiquitos Lagoon on the Pacific Ocean. The first inhabitants of Leucadia were Native American tribes the San Diequitos, the La Jollans and the Dieguenos. It was the Dieguenos who were mission converts and who helped to build the Spanish Missions in the area.

Encinitas was founded more than 100 years ago by Jabez Pitcher, who is considered to be the father of the city. It is made up of several communities that boast their own distinct personalities. "Historic Encinitas" fills the Highway 101 Corridor that parallels the beautiful beaches and ocean. The city was incorporated in 1986, drawing together the communities of New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain and Leucadia. "New Encinitas" centers on El Camino Real (The Kings Highway founded by the early missionaries from Spain). Cardiff-by-the-Sea is made up of quaint homes dotting the hillsides overlooking the sea and was named after Cardiff, Wales in 1914.

Thanks to its fertile soil and mild climate, Encinitas has emerged as “The Flower Capital of the World.” The annual Encinitas Flower Show has been held continually since 1923 and is one of the oldest and most popular on the West Coast. Encinitas' diverse cultures, beautiful beaches and championship surfing make it a vacationer’s paradise. A drive along the world-famous Pacific Coast Highway reveals many charming bed & breakfasts, magnificent restaurants and beautiful campgrounds. Escondido is also home to the California Center for the Arts.

Encinitas offers a wide range of adventurous activities for the active traveler. Walk through the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, the largest coastal wetland in San Diego County and a haven for more than 300 species of birds. Enjoy the fun of surfing, swimming, fishing, cycling, camping, hiking, ocean kayaking and sunbathing in Encinitas. Championship golf at the Encinitas Ranch Resort offers golfers a wonderful mix of challenge and excitement along with scenic ocean views. There are 12 golf courses in the city and more than 50 other courses are within a short drive away.

Historic downtown Encinitas offers a wide variety of shops, restaurants, cultural activities and historic buildings including the vintage La Paloma Theatre, built in 1928. Antique galleries and quaint coffee houses line the coast through Leucadia, Encinitas and Cardiff-by-the-Sea.

Quail Botanical Gardens, the only botanical garden in San Diego County, has one of the world's most diverse plant collections. Scenic trails take visitors to 20 unique gardens, a 60-foot waterfall in a tropical rain forest and North America's largest display of bamboo.

All of Southern California’s world-famous attractions, including the San Diego Zoo, the San Diego Wild Animal Park, Disneyland, the Hollywood Walk of Fame, the Lawrence Welk Resort and much, much more are less than a two-hour drive away.
